Conducting and coordinating research and development on land drainage and watershed management
Prepare and implement a land drainage schemes:
- Develop an inventory and map all the existing natural and built drainage infrastructures.
- Coordinate with Local authorities, the National Development Unit and the Road Development Authority, to identify and map the drainage networks and implement drainage infrastructure works. This includes renovating, scaling up and building new drainage networks, implementing nature-based protection structures including swales, natural drains and retention ponds, as well as restoring wetlands.
- Prepare and implement and drainage schemes.
- Provide technical assistance for the development of ecological engineering works and alternative techniques and nature based solutions to improve the resilience of Mauritius against the impacts of climate change.
- Provide technical advice and hold public awareness campaigns in local communities and the most vulnerable areas, sharing knowledge on good practices such as not blocking drains with solid waste.


Teamwork:
The LDA has a dedicated survey team to carry out survey across the island.
